We hope to see you soon!
Halibut Fishing can be an all day endeavor as we pursue the largest fish inhabiting British Columbia’s waters. We will be right beside you to help you to understand how to land these mighty fish when the exciting moment catches you! This fishing is considered some of the best, anywhere in the world. While we will be targeting halibut, ling cod or various rock cod may pay a visit to our lines. Please note that our halibut fishing charters must be made in advance and are more subject to the weather conditions since we need to travel offshore to reach the fishing grounds.
We don’t just have halibut fishing, salmon fishing is another fantastic fishery we have
Reserving a boat is highly recommended, best times book up fast
The geographical location of Ucluelet is perfect for intercepting all species of migrating Vancouver Island Halibut that are traveling up to the shallower waters off Vancouver Island. Halibut congregate on the offshore banks with highly productive waters fueled by cold up welling currents, hungry halibut like to feed on the abundant schools of salmon, cod, crabs, herring, pilchards, squid and needle fish. Everything to them is a tasty meal.
The Pacific Halibut is a larger halibut than the California Halibut, sometimes growing to well over 500 pounds. The average weight of a sport-caught halibut is about 20 – 40 pounds, although 100 pound fish are relatively common.
When fishing halibut, we use our heavier rods and tackle to go down deep for the bottom dwellers, mostly using spreader bars with up to about a 2lb lead and 50 to 80 lb leaders with artificial grubs or other bait like herring, squid or octopus, I Like to use fresh salmon bellies, sometimes we will use 8oz to 24 oz halibut jigs, but can be very tiring on the arms. Fishing in depths from 150 feet to over 300 feet. Sometimes when we are BC Salmon Fishing with our downriggers, We will lower our cannon balls down to the bottom, slow down our troll and drag our cannon balls on the bottom, then bringing them up off the bottom about 5 to 15 feet and then back down to the bottom, this is ringing the dinner bell and often picking up a nice Pacific Halibut.
BC Halibut Fishing Trips end in the mid afternoon, which allows time to get the fish processed. Wild Pacific Charters recommends “Fishful Thinking” for quality processing. By the time you’re ready to return home, your fish is cleaned, vacuum packed and frozen, travel-ready and ready to cook. For more time on the water, book a package fishing charter of two or more days of halibut fishing and salmon fishing. Multiple days allows more fishing time, since the fish can be stored on ice or frozen. Only on the final day of the fishing charter does the water time have to be cut short to allow time for fish processing.
As an added bonus, you’ll see some of the most spectacular scenery in the world as you cruise the pristine wilderness off B.C.’s Vancouver Island. Bring your camera – you’ll be filming more than just the big one! See the Halibut Fishing and Salmon Fishing picture gallery.
